Hi Damien
NAND is the internal Memory/Firmware of each console - not the internal SD-Card.

The NAND Mod is basically making upgrading (installing) and downgrading of your firmware safe - as you always can read and write straight to the NAND even the console has a faulty/bricked Firmware.
As you have a backup of it. But mostly people do use the "Hard Mod" for downgrading and other manipulations...

You can use it to install a bootloader A9HL, install custom Firmware, homebrews, regionfree games and much more.
